5 Simple Steps to Hosting Your Own Yoga Retreat

Planning a yoga retreat in Thailand

Planning a yoga retreat can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time or you want to organize an international retreat. Read on to learn from some of our tried and true practices as well as how you can easily plan your own yoga retreat in Thailand.

1. Pick a theme

What’s the purpose of your retreat? What intention do you want to weave throughout the program? Every retreat should have a clear focus both for creating a cohesive experience and to make the retreat stand out from others. What can you offer that separates you from the crowd? What do your students want to focus on? Do they want to deepen their practice and really try to push their own limits or are they looking for a more relaxing holiday to unwind from the stresses of everyday life?

2. Pick a destination

While it may sound appealing to run your own retreat in Costa Rica or Bali, if you haven’t spent much time in those places your planning process is going to be difficult. When choosing a destination, pick a place you’re familiar with or at least have strong contacts in.

3. Start planning early

Many teachers and tour operators recommend planning and beginning your retreat at least a year in advance. That may sound like a long time at first, but when you consider the amount of planning and logistics that go into organizing a group program, especially to a far off destination, and securing enough participants to make the retreat financially viable, a year won’t seem like so much. It takes time to get organized, build momentum and get students to commit to attending. Start early!

4. Make it easy – get some help

Here at Thailand Yoga Holidays, we don’t just run our own retreats but also work with yoga teachers from around the world to help organize their yoga retreats in Thailand. Trying to plan an international retreat takes a lot of work and can be stressful – especially if you’re not completely familiar with the destination you’re heading to.

With our Retreat Hosting services we work with you to decide what you want included in your program then organize everything – from local transportation and accommodation to even the online registration and payment process.

While we can organize a completely customized retreat from scratch, we make it even easier by offering popular set itineraries so all you have to do is show up with your students! (Check out the set programs here.)

5. Promote, promote, promote

Once you start getting everything in order, begin working on a strategy to promote your retreat – the more time your students have to plan on attending the better. Think about all the ways and places you can share information about your retreat to get people excited such as:

  • Announcements at the end of your classes
  • Flyers in the studios you teach at or at local community spaces – where do your students go outside of class? Can you post a flyer at the local co-op or gym?
  • Multiple announcements and reminders on your website and across your social media channels
  • Messages to your email mailing list
  • Listings on retreat booking sites
  • Sharing information with your family and friends

(Another benefit of planning your retreat with us is that we’ll provide you with flyer designs you can use as well as share your retreat details across our website and social media channels for even more exposure!)

Organizing a retreat is a lot of work, but in the end it’s totally worth it as you get to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience with incredible people in a stunning place!
